American Modernism and Depression Documentary

Jeff Allred : Oxford University Press

These are comps presented a few weeks ago. The author supplied the image and asked for a design with a cinematic feel. The bottom comp takes that cue too literally but something about the circle appealed to me. The top comp is the approved design.

The Occult Life of Things

edited by Fernando Santos-Granero : University of Arizona Press

The author requested multiple images and the use of the fabric shown on his final cover design. So, I edited down the images and paired the busy weave of the fabric and photos with a clean palette and modern typography. Thankfully this mix hit the right balance with both the author and client.

Reflections in Place

Donna Deyhle : University of Arizona Press

Happily another cover project with Emmi Whitehorse imagery came my way this month. The author and artist are friends so the project arrived with this image. The art lends itself to a poetic treatment (I have designed two poetry books using other Whitehorse paintings) but this is a scholarly text with interviews of Navajo women; so, I kept the palette neutral and utilized a more traditional placement of typography to better reflect the scholarship contained within.

The Role of Play in Human Development

Anthony D. Pellegrini : Oxford University Press

The final cover.

Chiefs, Scribes & Ethnographers

James Howe : University of Texas Press

The author had an original mola created for the cover imagery. The first comp is a more typical way to utilize the imagery and suits the subject well and ultimately was the chosen design for the final. The second comp was more of an experiment to see how else I could use the embroidered piece and still be true to the spirit of the piece and the content of the book.

The Role of Play in Human Development [comps]

Anthony D. Pellegrini : Oxford University Press

A medical textbook that needed a serious, professional look while also reflecting the subject of play. These are the three ideas presented. Middle comp was selected and in undergoing some typographic revisions.

Murder by Accident

Jody Enders : University of Chicago Press

Final cover after an extensive search to find the right medieval sword. We were hoping to find one that was jewel-encrusted but without springing for a photo shoot this is as close as we could come. I think the angle of the sword on the first rough was more effective, but it simply wasn't the right time-period for this scholarly title.

This is under review. Alternate cover with silhouette is below.

Plague Writing in Early Modern England

Ernest B. Gilman : University of Chicago Press

Final cover with deleted subtitle (a rarity in university books!)

Plague Writing in Early Modern England [comps]

Ernest B. Gilman : University of Chicago Press

This project is still under review. I was asked to provide three different approaches. The first features a painting from inside the book that editorial felt was suitable for the project; the image had to be cropped to fit the trim of the book so I have the bottom showing a detail of the dead and the top showing the angels of salvation. The second cover features a detail from one of the historic flyers contained in the book which were all very graphic and interesting to use. And, the third cover is a stock image of Black Plague skulls -- I overlaid this bleak image with delicate red crosses.

The Family Ranch

Linda Hussa : University of Nevada Press

The photograph was provided by Madelaine Graham Blake and I have learned over the years that when you have a nice photograph the best thing to do is get out of its way.

Child Poverty and Inequality

Duncan Lindsey : Oxford University Press

The publisher provided the image and it was a challenge to marry the seriousness of the subject with the playfulness of the image. Isolating moments by cropping the image seemed to hit the right balance.

Redesigning Social Inquiry

Charles C. Ragin : University of Chicago Press

The author provided the abstract painting. I introduced the circle art to play off the Venn diagram circles within the text. It is a busy cover but seems to suit the subject.

Emma Goldman, Volumes 1 & 2

A Documentary History of the American Years
edited by Candace Falk : University of Illinois Press

The set is being reissued by Illinois in paperback and I hope that the texts find new readers. I was fascinated to learn more about this independent thinker.

Tudor Autobiography

Meredith Anne Skura : University of Chicago Press

Another hand-colored image. This time I used my favorite German watercolor set. The pans are getting so low that I think I will soon treat myself to another one and pass the well-used set onto my kids.

Creative Power [comps]

edited by Micki McGee : Columbia University Press

An interesting volume on the politics and art inside the gates of Yaddo in upstate New York. The book will accompany an exhibit of Yaddo artists. I proposed a more political angle that showed a mock-up of a flag with a detail of the gate to play off the art and politics in the book, but the title needed to be downplayed so I am now working with a more straightforward solution and I used a monochromatic treatment for the title to push is back a bit. Still under review, so we'll see.

UPDATE: The project was ultimately placed with another designer after the title changed and an image change were requested. See the final cover here.
