Samuel Otter : Oxford University Press
The publisher liked the bottom layout from the first comps and wanted a few other options that had a similar feel. The first group of comps looked too much like fiction so these comps are more traditional and scholarly.

Ritual and Remembrance in the Ecuadorian Andes [revised comps]
Rachel Corr : University of Arizona Press
We are sticking with the metallic gold and black combo but I tweaked the type and image crop from the first round of comps. These two are under consideration.

The publisher requested a more traditional, scholarly approach than the first round of comps. The blue and orange roughs are under consideration.

The American Slave Narrative [comps]
Julia Lee : Oxford University Press
The research for the layouts was intensive, but really fun. Several new books on the market are filled with loads of eye candy and they helped spur along my ideas. I especially enjoyed flipping through the Handy Book of Artistic Printing. For this academic title I tried to emulate traditional Victorian style, but with a twist. This project is currently under review.

The Occult Life of Things
edited by Fernando Santos-Granero : University of Arizona Press
The author requested multiple images and the use of the fabric shown on his final cover design. So, I edited down the images and paired the busy weave of the fabric and photos with a clean palette and modern typography. Thankfully this mix hit the right balance with both the author and client.

Reflections in Place
Donna Deyhle : University of Arizona Press
Happily another cover project with Emmi Whitehorse imagery came my way this month. The author and artist are friends so the project arrived with this image. The art lends itself to a poetic treatment (I have designed two poetry books using other Whitehorse paintings) but this is a scholarly text with interviews of Navajo women; so, I kept the palette neutral and utilized a more traditional placement of typography to better reflect the scholarship contained within.

Chiefs, Scribes & Ethnographers
James Howe : University of Texas Press
The author had an original mola created for the cover imagery. The first comp is a more typical way to utilize the imagery and suits the subject well and ultimately was the chosen design for the final. The second comp was more of an experiment to see how else I could use the embroidered piece and still be true to the spirit of the piece and the content of the book.
